Non-computer technology- Writing Composition-Portable Spell Checker

Non-computer technology- Writing Composition-Portable Spell Checker

Hey Everyone,

Today's post is to review the Franklin Spelling Corrector by Franklin Electronics. This item was purchased through Amazon  for $16.95 plus shipping. The item is small about 5 inches in length and features over 110,000 words. The product info states that it can recognized words spelled phonetically so tried coming up with my own errors but found myself trying to spell words with IPA in mind. This didn't work to well with dictionary and the screen would flash "Sorry can't help". So instead of making up my own errors I Googled "second grade writing example rough draft" and below is the example of a 2nd grader's story about "Rubecky The Little Girl". I selected ten errors and found that the dictionary was in fact able to find the correct spelling and often brought up the correct word first in the list of options. Below the picture you may find the list of words I used.

If I were to recommend this product it would be for a student that is already capable of writing independently and probably at least in the third grade. The reason for this is because the buttons are small (three rows of buttons are penny sized). This device would require many fine motor movements. Also, this particular model does not have speech output. The lack of voice output would then require the user to already be fairly familiar with the general spelling of words. This would be ideal for someone that is already in the revision process of their writing.
